Information on the Volusia Region Area

More than 400,000 people call Volusia County home. Situated on the east coast of Central Florida, our 47 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches are a world class playground, with beach front cities including Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach.

Early automotive pioneers such as Louis Chevrolet and Henry Ford enjoyed their leisure time in the sun and found that the hard packed sand, gentle slope and wide expanse of Volusia's beach was the perfect proving ground for early auto racing.

The Daytona Beach strip is called the “World’s Most Famous Beach” because of its history of car racing along the ocean edge and the elegant resorts like the Clarendon and Princess Issena that catered to the sport’s early champagne-set customers. Racing on the beach goes back to 1903, when Alexander Winton and Ransom Olds raced each other in the first timed car trials and Ormond Beach acquired the nickname, “Birthplace of Speed.” Racing on the beach increased and went south to Daytona and to a 3.2 mile course north of the Ponce Inlet lighthouse. Racing relocated off the beach about 1959.

The racing tradition continues today at Daytona International Speedway, one of the world's finest racing facilities and the home of the world-famous Daytona 500, an event larger than the Super Bowl.
