During the weekend of January 18th, 19th and 20th, 2008 at the
invitation of the Miami Design Preservation League our region showcased
our cars in conjunction with the Art Deco Weekend festivities on
along Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. Club members and non-members
participated in an opening day parade held on Friday night, and collectible cars
shows on Saturday and Sunday whose only requirement was that the car
be 25 years old or older. It's hard to believe but the car you
drove in 1983 was eligible for this show.
We have a lot of pictures of the cars, the fun, and
even a surprise or two. We start our Art Deco adventures on
Friday night with a kickoff parade, followed by a warm sunny Chamber
of Commerce weather Saturday with our cars lined up along Ocean
Drive on beautiful Miami Beach next to the booths filled of period
furniture, art, and bric-a-brac. There were food
vendors, performance artists, stilt walkers and costumed characters
and, of course, our antique automobiles framed against a clear blue
sky and art deco architecture. Sunday the bad weather the rest of the nation
experienced on Saturday arrived in South Florida which gave us a
damp, windy and cool day that only 20 brave car owners ventured
forth for our show. Your's truly worked the show on Sunday while the car
remained warm and dry in the garage. Seems the car has more
sense than the owner.
Show Chairman Mel Mann thanks all of the volunteers who worked with
him to make this event so successful: Ira Shapiro, Bob Squier,
Philip Williams, Alex Fardales, Greg Paiewonsky, Guy Lewis, Stan
Jacobs, and Andy Leavy. Special thanks to our guest photographer,
Howard Schneider who captured the event with superb images.
I attended all three days, but we had Howard Schneider
as our designated photographer so all of Friday night's parade
photos are
his as are most of the photos of Saturday. Photos from Ernesto Romero, Philip Williams and a few
of mine are in the mix. Thank you gentlemen for your time and talent.
If you could not join in on one of these three events you
missed out on one great weekend of fun. What follows should give
you an idea of what is was like.
