Annual happenings from the February Atlantic City trip to "spring dust off" to summer cruises (see calendar), picnics, monthly meeting, to the fall car show, (with flea market) to the end of the year's Christmas party at one of Staten Island's finest restaurants, highlights the SIRAACA'S annual events. On the Classic Car Calendar Of Events, the yearly activities can be found. The purpose of this website is to share the hobby, related pictures, (there are about 5000 pictures posted) stories and articles with more people than possible with local newsletters, meetings or even monthly nationally syndicated magazines. Also let people know they don't have to attend meetings to enjoy the hobby. People in small, far away communities, who don't have access to car show can see beautiful cars of yesteryear. We feature antique automobiles, hot rods, muscle cars, classic cars, brass cars of the early 1900, fire-engines, school buses. Personal pictures of those by-gone era roads also displayed. Such road is the "Mother Road" (RT66) A big part of it is still in use. Alongside there are graveyards of old automobiles that used to use it on a regular basis. Take a few minutes

Did you know that,
| "The new mechanical wagon
with the awful name automobile has come to stay..." New York Times (1897
article)
The New York Times' mention of the name automobile was the first public use of the term by the media and helped to popularize that name for motor vehicles. However, the credit for the name automobile goes to a 14th Century Italian painter and engineer named Martini. Martini never built an automobile but he did draw plans for a man-powered carriage with four wheels. Martini thought up the name automobile from the Greek word, "auto," (meaning self) and the Latin word, "mobils," (meaning moving). The other popular name for an automobile is the car. The word car is derived from Celtic word "carrus," (meaning cart or wagon). |
What other names for motor
vehicles have famous automobile inventors used? Let's check the names
they used in their patent applications.
Other early media references to motor vehicles included names such as: autobaine, autokenetic, autometon, automotor horse, buggyaut, diamote, horseless carriage. mocole, motor carriage, motoring, motor-vique, and the oleo locomotive. By Mary Bellis |
| The
Inventor of the Windshield Wiper Was a Woman? Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after noticing that a streetcar motorman had to keep his window open on a wet day to see the road. In 1903, she was awarded a 17-year patent for a hand operated wiper that moved in a fan pattern. It was her only known invention. |
She
died in 1953 at age 87. In spite of the practicality of her idea, some time went by before windshield wipers became popular. "Automatic" fold-down wipers were firs featured on some cars in 1910. It was not until 1916, however, that mechanical windshield wipers became standard equipment on American Cars. |

100 YEARS AGO...... |
100 YEARS FROM NOW..... The 200 the Annual North American Auto Show, held on the beach in beautiful Easton PA (global warming, and rising ocean levels have moved the Atlantic shoreline west just a bit) saw the first display of the Ford Spleen (they ran out of good names in 2077.) The Spleen features thought-activated throttle, and steering, and runs solely on old vinyl record albums (you shouldn't have thrown those away.) Ford had no competition, as the buying spree it began in the 1990's (remember Jaguar, Astin Martin, Volvo?) culminated last year with the takeover of its last rival, Tucker (Preston's great-great-great-grandson finally got approval to build the darned thing in 2048.) The spleen joins Ford's mid-priced line, starting at $100,000, delivered straight to your door (add an extra $10,000 for delivery charges to colonies outside the tri-planet area.) |
