From the July 2003 issue:
GREAT AMERICAN RACE RUNS THRU GAINESVILLE:
It was probably the last significant car event that we’ll see this summer.
On an overcast afternoon on July 3, the 21st annual Great American Race made its way through downtown Gainesville. Leaving Lake City in the morning, the long string of 95 or so antique autos ambled into Gainesville starting about 2PM and continued for about two hours. Each car parked at the Commerce Building downtown for about 20 minutes while each driver took a breather. After a quick cold drink, the driver’s heading off down the road to their final destination at Daytona Beach.
Several club members made it out to the displays in Gainesville and Lake City, including Larry Shaw, Gene Honeycutt, Carl Fritz, Jim Buffington, Joe Baldinelli, and Dave Johnson. There may have been others, but it was a work day and playing hooky is not always easy. For those people that didn’t make it, we’ve got some photos in this issue to give you a hint of the experience you missed. (Note: Larry Shaw’s picture turned up in the G’ville Sun’s coverage of the Race.)
