The AACA
LER August Visit to Forest Lawn Cemetery and the Buffalo
Waterfront
August 12, 2012
Chuck Facklam was the
host of this great event that took LER members on a guided
tour of Forest Lawn Cemetery where we visited gravesites of
many famous people from Buffalo, including some from the
automotive industry. Next was a driving tour to the see
the gardens and homes in Elmwood Village, a stop at Canalside
in the downtown Buffalo waterfront, and a meal at the Pearl
Street Grille.

Sandy Starks and Peter Filim were our guides for this tour.
The first stop was at the Blocher Mausoleum, which is world
famous, and has some symbolism attached to it. The Blocher
family produced shoes and boots and when the son died, this
mausoleum was created for him. He is laid out with Mom
and Dad nearby, and is wearing a very prominent pair of boots.
This family was the first to create both a right and left
shoe, when previously all shoes were made to wear on either
foot. |

 |
 |
 |

|
The George N Pierce Mausoleum, which houses about eight family
members, includes some very elaborate windows, floors, walls
and a small lobby. George actually showed up in person at
Birge Mausoleum site and talked about his life in producing
the Pierce Arrow automobile. He had some nice things to say
about the array of antique cars we had driven. |

Sandy and Peter talked about the Frank Lloyd Wright designed
crypts that expand across a section of the cemetery and appear
to be a series of steps, the high steps in the set being the
most expensive. Some of these are still available for
purchase. The Darwin Martin family has a plot in Forest
Lawn, with a stone designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Millard
Fillmore has a family plot on a hill with a very tall marker,
and a very simple stone that says "M.F.". Our
visit included stops at the Cramer Mausoleum, and the Oishei
Mausoleum a well. |

After the cemetery tour, Chuck provided us with a tour through
the Elmwood Village to see all the pretty old homes with their
colorful array of beautiful gardens, and then a visit to the
Buffalo Waterfront and Canalside. Chuck provided some
nice background on the discovery of the beginning of the Erie
Canal and how the waterfront has started to develop. The
area includes some Naval Ships, tall masted ships, the Miss
Buffalo, the Moondance Catamaran, the concert venue on the
waterfront, and our final stop was a delicious meal at the
Pearl Street Grille. |

The AACA
LER Rustbuster Tour
May 6, 2012
Each May, the Lake
Erie Region sets up a tour in May to encourage members to get
their antique autos out of storage, dust them off, fill up the
tank and go for a ride. This year, Tim Cryan put together a
great tour that stared out on May Street in Lancaster and
started our travel through the Western New York countryside to
Yancy's Fancy for a first stop at this great cheese factory.
After that we enjoyed a ride with a rest stop at a great gift
shop and a walk through an impressive garage, known as Muscle
Car Alley, with
some restorations in progress throughout the facility.
Our tour ended after about two hours of driving at the Hearth
for a delicious dinner. What a great way to spend a
Sunday under blue skies and sunshine!
