Collectors Rally in Arizona to Bring $119 Million in Sales
It was a long eventful week in the Valley of the Sun. Unfortunately,
there was not a lot of sun as there was rain and bad
weather. Despite Mother Nature's fury, over $119 million dollars
changed hands and 1,448 cars went home with different owners,
letting us know that things are getting better for the collector car
hobby.
Barrett-Jackson kicked things off right with discounted admission
for families on Monday. That night they held a private Gala and
dinner reception with special guest speaker Carroll Shelby. The
vendor tent was packed with booths that had something for
everyone. My personal favorites were the massage chairs. They kept
things rolling on Tuesday and Wednesday despite the heavy rains and
cold winds blowing through Scottsdale. The Barrett-Jackson crew
constructed a "pre-staging" tent to help keep cars dry before
crossing the auction block. The Mequiar's team did a phenomenal job
keeping the cars looking beautiful and water-spot free. I want to
thank these two teams for making it a little easier for us.
On
Thursday, RM Auctions put on a tremendous sale they rightly
named "The British are Coming". In which 55 lots were offered, all
of British marques. Many buyers weathered the storm to join the RM
team. The night's top seller was a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT that
brought $1,001,000. During the inaugural RM event only miles down
the road, Barrett-Jackson's very large tents started causing
concerns. The vendor and expo tents had to be evacuated due to the
severe weather and a tornado warning. However, the main tent where
the auction took place never missed a beat. Contrary to popular
rumor, the auction never stopped. The main tent was secure and you
would have never known that just outside was Arizona's worst weather
since June, 1972.
Also,
that night, only a mile down the road was Russo and Steele's auction
site. They were celebrating their tenth year in the business with
a "Decade of Distinction" party. Unfortunately, the weather forced
their closing and swift evacuation of all their tents. Two of Russo
and Steele's tents were damaged that night. While one of the 800
foot tents collapsed on top of the inventory of auction cars, the
other tent was carried from the auction site and blown onto State
Hwy Loop 101 only steps away. The highway was immediately shut down
in both directions and the state emergency crews quickly arrived to
help assess damages and injuries. Luckily, no body was seriously
hurt. Only one person reported an injury and it wasn't
critical. Sadly, some of the cars at Russo and Steele were damaged.
Nobody was allowed on the grounds until the city approved the site
and car owners were left wondering if they were affected. Both
Grundy and Hagerty Insurance Companies were on the scene the next
morning to give car owners piece of mind, answer questions, and
assess damages.
Over
at the Fashion Square, Gooding and Company had a phenomenal Friday
sale with an astonishing 94% sell-through rate and earning nearly
$15 million. The top sale for the day was the 1956 Jaguar D-Type in
which the gravel fell at a cool $3.74 million. David Gooding was
extremely excited about breaking the world record with the $1.1
million sale of the 1959 Costin Lister Jaguar Sports
Racer. Saturday's sale was just as good giving them a cumulative
sell-through rate of 91% and earning a total of $33.9 million. Seven
lots sold for more that $1 million each and another world record was
broke on Saturday with the sale of a 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Series
V Gran Sport at $1.54 million.
RM closed out their auction on Friday night with an 88% sell-through
rate and $19.6 million in sales. That is a 5% increase in lots sold
and an 8% increase in sales totals from last years' auction. A
stunning 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra, formerly part of the Otis Chandler
Collection, sold for $632,500. Barrett-Jackson wrapped up their week
with $68 million in total sales and 1184 cars going across the block
which is an 11% increase from the 2009 event. The week's top seller
was a 1929 Hamilton Metalplane H-47 that reached $671,000. Russo and
Steele's auction was held on Sunday and Monday despite the rocky
start over the weekend. Much to Drew Alcazar and his staff's credit,
the show must go on. They did a wonderful job keeping everyone on
task and pulling through this tough situation. Russo & Steele have
not yet released their sales statistics.
Buyers came out in droves to participate in the Scottsdale
auctions. With $119 million dollars trading hands, it shows that the
confidence amongst collectors and buyers are high. It seems there is
light at the end of the tunnel despite a downed economy.

Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance 2010
Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance is right around the corner
happening March 12-14th at the incredible Ritz-Carlton. The 2010
event will not fall short of activities as this will mark the
concours' 15th birthday. We are showing two cars this year; a 1938
Lagonda V-12 drophead and a 1955 Flajole Forerunner concept car.
Come join us for a wonderful weekend.
With such an important milestone, Bill Warner felt the honoree had
to be just as important. So he asked Richard Petty. A
seven-time NASCAR champion and winner of 200 races during his
career, Petty is considered one of the greatest stock car drivers
ever.
Mercedes -Benz is once again a featured marque for this year's
concours. You may view their display, along with Rolls-Royce, Spyker
North America, Iconic and Ultimate MotorWorks, at the front entrance
of the Ritz-Carlton.
One
of the classes this year is Motor Trend Cover Cars, and for that we
are bringing our 1955 Flajole Forerunner Concept Car. It's an
eye-catching sports coupe built on a modified Jaguar XK120
chassis. This svelte Forerunner boasts qualities that would take
auto-makers decades to fully appreciate, proclaiming it as a
milestone in automotive design and concept. It graced the cover of
Motor Trend magazine in 1955 and has since been fully-restored.
Also going to Amelia Island is our 1938 Lagonda V-12 drophead. With
an engine designed by W.O. Bentley and a body designed by Frank
Feeley, this automobile is arguably one of the most beautiful
pre-war cars ever built. It is a fabulous piece of engineering that
is just as fabulous to drive. Look for it in the European Classic
Pre War class (1936-1939).
RM
Auctions also returns to Amelia Island for their 10th year. They
have an extraordinary selection of vehicles in their line-up. Also,
joining us at Amelia Island for the first year is Gooding &
Company. They have an eye for quality and distinction which makes
their offering at Amelia common sense. One of their featured lots is
the 1931 Voison C20 V-12 "Mylord" Demi Berline that won Pebble
Beach's "Best of Show" award. This car has never been offered at
auction before and it will be one lucky bidder that will get to take
it home.
There is never a bad word said about Amelia Island. That is why you
must join us for the 2010 event.
With so much happening, you are bound to find something new and
exciting to see and enjoy. Start your spring season off right with
us in Florida.
