1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda
Plymouth's resounding message to insurance companies in 1970 was:
"Damn the torpedos— full speed ahead!" And so the
Hemi 'Cuda was born, one of the quintessential American
muscle cars and perhaps the most coveted Plymouth ever built. The 1970
Hemi 'Cuda still attracts top dollar when offered. Rare enough in
authentic form, this car has spawned many imitators in replica form, and
even these go for big money.
The Mopar Hemi cars were about as good as it got during the Golden Age
of muscle cars, and the 1970 Hemi Cuda was certainly one of fiercest.
Today, it is one of the rarest and most coveted.

Issue 5: Troubleshooting
Electrical Gremlins
Perhaps your collector car doesn't want to start on cold mornings,
runs roughly, or some electrical systems refuse to function. Perhaps it
may be time to replace the wiring harness, or convert the vehicle over
to 12-volts. On the other hand, especially if you intend to keep the
vehicle in original condition, a 12-volt conversion, complete with an
alternator, may not be the way to go.
Automotive electrical systems are usually either 6 volts or 12 volts,
with the exception of many military vehicles which are 24-volts. Most
older U.S. vehicles manufactured prior to 1956 are 6-volts. A 6-volt
vehicle will have three vent caps on the battery. There are exceptions
to every rule, and the exception is some imports (along with some GM and
Chrysler vehicles) beginning around 1953 that were 12-volts. Volkswagen
continued with 6-volt systems up to 1967. A well-maintained stock
automobile that was originally 6 volts will probably function well on
the stock electrical system. However, if you plan to install a lot of
modern accessories, such as an 800-watt super-mega sound system, or to
restify a 1952 Chevrolet Bel Air by installing a 454-cubic-inch
Chevrolet engine, you should consider converting over to 12 volts as the
6-volt electrical system will not have the required energy to handle
spark requirements on a high-compression engine.

Iola is Just Around the Corner
The Iola Old Car Show will definitely be looking beyond the "Big 3" at
this year's event. Marques like Kaiser, Studebaker, Packard, Jaguar and
a long list of other nameplates will be taking center stage as the
Midwest's largest car show focuses its theme on "Independents &
Imports."
Of course, there will be a little of everything on display as more than
4,400 swap spaces fill up and as many as 150,000 visitors flock to the
300-acre show grounds. Among the many attractions for the show will be a
big gathering of "gangster" cars from the upcoming Johnny Depp film
"Public Enemies," a much-publicized depiction of John Dillinger's crime
spree.
The show runs from July 9-12 in Iola, Wis.

Iola '09 Salutes Independents & Imports
"Independents and Imports — Alternatives to the Detroit Three" is
the theme of the 37th annual Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet. Vehicles
from America's rich heritage of independent manufacturers and those from
other lands make up the feature tent and display area during the July
9-12 event in Iola, Wis.
When the Wisconsin Chapter of the Society of Automotive Historians came
up with the 2009 theme in 2007, the current plight of the "Detroit
Three" (General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC) was not
apparent. By no means is the show theme this year intended to show
disrespect for the "Detroit Three."
Independents haven't been the central theme of the Iola Old Car Show
since 1995. With their number dwindling in the past 14 years, adding
collectible imports to the theme area was done to boost the number of
feature vehicles on display.

The Real Story Behind This Year's Iola Poster Cars
Outstanding examples of the 2009 Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet
theme "Independents and Imports" are featured on this year's poster.
In a country setting are a 1953 Kaiser Dragon four-door sedan and 1954
Jaguar XK120M Roadster.
The Kaiser is owned by Lowell Johnson of Sheboygan, Wis., and his son
Lance of Combined Locks, Wis., while the Jaguar belongs to Ron and Carol
Green of Lecanto, Fla. Both the cars and the owners have interesting
stories.
