1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza
Much-maligned over the years, the Chevrolet Corvair probably
deserved a better fate than it suffered. As legions of loyal fans have
discovered, Corvairs are agile, spirited, stylish and fun cars! Today,
despite Corvair's somewhat unconventional mechanicals and spotty
reputation, a well-organized club and parts network brings practical and
economical ownership of these rewarding vehicles to virtually any
enthusiast.
The Corvair was introduced for 1960 as an import fighter, and it's no
accident that the car was more than a little similar to the dreaded
"German Beetle" that it was intended to combat.

1933 Studebaker President Eight
The year 1933 found the automobile industry in the depths of the
Great Depression. The worsening economy hit all automakers hard, but it
was the independents that suffered the most. Pierce-Arrow, Auburn and
Duesenberg as well as many others, all stopped production during the
1930s.
1935 was a dismal year for Studebaker too, but the firm survived even as
production plummeted. Internal restructuring of model lines brought the
prestige of the President nameplate to a lower price level that, while
still a couple of steps above Ford and Chevrolet in quality and price,
gave astute buyers more value for their dollars.

1969 Boss 302 Mustang
In
the slang of the '60s the word "boss" had a bundle of connotations. It
meant "tough" or "awesome" (in the sense kids use the word today) and
something that was "boss" was something every right-minded person
aspired to. So, Ford picked it as a good name for its hot Mustang with
the new 302-cid V-8.
Actually there were two Bosses. The first was a race-ready Boss 429 with
Ford's NASCAR racing engine and completely redesigned front suspension.
Then came the Boss 302, which was intended for high-performance street
use.

The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air
The youth movement was in motion and Americans were getting "hipper"
in 1957. American Bandstand, beatniks and Brigitte Bardot were now part
of the culture.
The 1957 Chevys were in tune with the times. They had a more youthful,
tail-finned look that was "radical" for a once-upon-a-time
bread-and-butter car. "'57 Chevrolet! Sweet, smooth and sassy," said one
ad.
Triple-Turbine automatic drive, a bigger V-8 and a bevy of new ideas
including fuel injection made the '57 Chevy seem revolutionary and sexy.

Issue 3: Welding Skills
One
of the essential skills of body repair is the ability to attach two
pieces of metal together. While this can be accomplished with rivets or
adhesives, the most common and preferred method is welding. Welding is
the process of heating metal up to its melting point, allowing the
fusion of molecules between two separate sheets.
There are a number of ways to achieve the heat required to weld metal.
One way is by igniting a combination of flammable gases; another is
through the use of electricity to create an arc by grounding the rod (or
wire), or by creating an arc with an electrode to melt the metal, then
adding a filler rod of a similar material to the open gap. Fortunately
for those who are starting out in autobody repair, welding is not
difficult to learn. Once you acquire some fundamental techniques, you'll
find that they're applicable to all forms of welding. You'll also
discover that familiarity with the different types of welding equipment
is just as important as knowing how to use them.

Restoration Series.

The 1977 Pontiac Trans Am
{Editor's Note: In honor of the somber
news this week that Pontiac will soon be no more, we salute one of the
more memorable models to ever carry the Pontiac name plate).
It took a pretty stunning car to steal the show
from a lineup of Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason, Sally Field and Jerry
Reed. But movie makers found one that was up to the task.
Just as "Bullitt" and "Gone in 60 Seconds" will forever be linked with
their star cars, so will the 1977 Pontiac Special Edition Trans Am be
forever linked with Smokey And The Bandit — so much, in fact, that in
hobby parlance they are simply known as the Bandit Trans Ams.
