car that would change history, become probably the most noteworthy
automobile ever built, and launch Ford Motor Company to unmatched
heights.

From burros to Buicks
at Roswell yard
OCW's 'yard hound', Ron Kowalke, follows the trail to A-1
Salvage in Roswell, New Mexico. What he finds is a yard that has all the
correct ingredients: a long-term owner that knows his inventory and has
interesting stories to tell about the vehicles in his yard; a large
inventory of vintage cars and trucks; rare vehicles included in the
inventory; and a well laid out yard with logical groupings of vehicles.
Earning bonus points, A-1 Auto Salvage puts a unique spin on both its
guard animal and its storied location.

Ford flashback
If
you're of a certain age — say, north of 50 — you may find it a little
hard to believe that many cars of the 1980s are now considered antiques.
However, if you think about it, nearly 30 years have passed since the
'80s began. It also marks more than 25 years since the 1983 cars went on
sale, and for a 50-year-old car enthusiast, that's half a lifetime.
Perhaps it's time to take a closer look at some of the cars of the
1980s.

"We just kind of pushed the envelope a little further to show what it
takes to restore a Corvette," was Mackay's explanation for the car he
calls, appropriately, the "See-Through" car.

Editor's Note:
Every month we will be sending you the most
recent issue of the Old Cars Weekly E-mail Restoration Series. This
10-part series will will contain how-to-articles and photos providing
you with great tips on how to complete your next restoration project.
Issue 1: Bodywork Basics
Bodywork consists of all of the steps required to repair a damaged panel
up to the paint prep stage. These steps include assessing the damage,
grinding, repairing or reshaping the metal, molding and filling, and
sanding the surface until it's smooth and even with the rest of the
panel.
In a perfect world, the autobody repair and refinishing industries would
not be needed. Cars would never break or rust out, drivers would never
have accidents and paint would last forever. But the truth is that auto
repair and refinishing are big businesses in which many people are able
to make good livings. Autobody repair, customizing and painting skills
are valuable commodities in the automotive workforce.
However, since we all know that bodywork is a major part of any quality
restoration...
