1956 Pontiac Chieftain & Star Chief
With a new engineering group headed by E.M. "Pete" Estes and John Z.
Delorian, a new line of cars with true performance potential was
developed for Pontiac in 1956. To highlight a move into a competition
and factory acing program, and "extra horsepower" engine option with
dual four-barrel carburetors, dual exhausts and a full-race camshaft
rated at 285 hp was crafted by staff motor engineer Malcolm R. "Mac"
McKellar. It was released in mid-1956 and became the first in a series
of so-called NASCAR and Super-Duty Pontiac V-8s.
New Pontiac styling for 1956 featured combination bumper grilles with
enclosed circular parking lights and round, bomb-type bumper guards. All
models had reversed, vertically radiused slash accent moldings and
"sweepspear" body rub trim. On Chieftains, the slash accents had a
constant width. There were reflectorized oval embossments on the rear
fenders with gull-wing and circle medallions on the deck lid.

engine menus and option lists — THAT'S the really important,
hard-to-find stuff, and good luck trying to find all that in one place.
Until now.
Last week, we told you about a new online service from the team at Old
Cars Weekly that for the first time, provides car hobbyists a definitive
information clearing house at their fingertips – that will give them all
the really important, hard-to-find stuff.
Old Cars Report makes available the massive databases that

Old Cars Weekly and Old Cars Price Guide.

1963 Buick Riviera
The Riviera was a terrific car right from the beginning. Even
non-Buick lovers would have a hard time denying that it was a beautiful
car when it bowed for the first time in 1963. It was fast, fun to drive,
and had a lot of style.
In response to the growing success of Chevrolet's new Corvette "Sports
car," Ford Motor Company launched its own Thunderbird sports roadster in
1955. The sprightly two-passenger convertible was an immediate success
and it develop a devoted following over the first three years of its
production. After the novelty began to wear off, however, the obvious
shortcomings of its restricted passenger and luggage capacity because
obvious.
In a stroke of collective corporate creativity, Ford advance planners
determined that what was needed was a Thunderbird for the family. Thus,
for 1958, the generation of "square birds" was born. Thunderbird made
the transition from "sports" car to "personal luxury" car and became a
run-away best-seller.
Then, it was time for Buick to join the fray.

Editor's Note: Each month we will be sending you the most recent
issue of the Old Cars Weekly Email Restoration Series. This 10-part
series will contain how-to articles and photos providing you with great
tips on how to complete your next restoration project (or finish the one
currently sitting in your garage).
OCW Resto Series Issue 4: Floor Pan
Repair
From the salty tip of Texas to the moist summer air of Maine, sheet
metal can take a beating. With precious few exceptions, the metal floors
of most cars turn to Swiss cheese after 50 years and tens of thousands
of miles of exposure to water, snow and salt. Though floor pans are
seldom seen and sometimes forgotten, most restorers know they will have
to repair them on cars that enter their shops. Among those restorers is
Jerry Kopecky of Kopecky's Klassics in Iola, Wis.
Kopecky has restored several types of collector cars, but his
restoration business has evolved to specialize in finned MoPars,
especially convertibles. Thanks to his attention to detail, restorations
out of Kopecky's shop have commanded record prices for finned MoPar
convertibles at Barrett-Jackson's January auction. Kopecky's latest
project car is a customer's 1960 Chrysler 300-F convertible, one of
today's hottest postwar cars. That 300-F is the subject of this article,
though the principles that Kopecky undertook to repair the floor pans
apply to all finned MoPars, as well as most other metal-floored
vehicles.

1946 Ford Super Deluxe 'Woodie'
Whether seeing one brings back memories of the West Coast surfing
culture or
just elicits an admiration for craftsmanship well done in a
mass-produced
environment, "woodies," are a desirable segment of collectible
automobile
within the old car hobby. Ford had been producing its own wood-bodied
wagons
in its Iron Mountain, Michigan, assembly facility for many years, so
when
World War II ended, the automaker was ready to resume woodie production
in a
big way.
Offered exclusively in the Super Deluxe line, the '46 woodie wagon found
16,960 eager buyers. Today, the survivors are few as the wood-based
bodies
succumbed to the elements at a much higher rate than their steel-bodied
counterparts. In this demand-outstrips-supply-scenario, a '46 Ford
woodie
commands mid-five figures in solid condition.
