Shifting
into High Gear ... 2009 AACA Annual Meeting!
Thursday,
February 12 ~ Saturday, February 14, 2009
Looking forward to seeing you and your family at the
Sheraton Philadelphia City
Center Hotel located at 17th and Race
Streets. Please arrange your room reservations directly with
the Hotel, toll free (800) 325-3535, and be sure to ask for
the "AACA rate".
A wide variety of interesting and informative seminars
will be offered, such as:
CSI Minneapolis - This restorer spent
over 5 years working to meticulously restore a 1932
Franklin V/12. He describes the "automobile forensics"
necessary to make it all happen. This is a presentation of
a very thorough restoration and he describes what it takes
to do a car in his words, "to high authentic standards.
Not the quick & easy route."
Women in the Hobby and For the Ladies: The
language of Fans are 2 new programs to interest
the ladies at our meeting. The first is to describe some
of the ways that our female members can become involved in
national activities. We have many women who are active
locally, however they may not realize the opportunities at
division and national events where their interests and
abilities would be welcomed. The Fans seminar is a
continuation of our hope to provide programs to those not
necessarily interested in restoring or maintaining antique
automobiles. It will be a 2 part program, first
describing the "language" spoken by the use of fans in
their heyday, and then a hands-on activity, making a fan.
London to Brighton Auto Run - This is a
must see. Our presenters will show photos of this year's
London to Brighton tour in their 1903 Pierce as one of the
500+ entries. Most importantly, they finished. All of our
members should enjoy hearing about these amusing and
interesting events.
In addition to these great seminar opportunities, the AACA
73rd Annual Meeting will have a full menu of diverse
activities for every members' enjoyment ... the Lady's
Breakfast, Trade Exhibit, AACA Museum Auction, Philadelphia
City of Brotherly Love Trolley Tours, General Membership
Meeting, Social Events and Outings ... and the fabulous
year-end AACA National Awards Reception and Banquet!
Don't delay,
register today ... Annual
Meeting registration deadline is Friday, January 30.
Tickets are required for all events.

A Wintertime Arizona
Old Car Activity
By Tom Reese

The 1913 Model T has been
relocated to Arizona to keep its owner occupied thru
the winter months. It turns out that the weather
that pleases the owner has some bad effects on the
T, one of which is the drying out of the wooden
wheels, hence the popularity of wire wheels in dry
states.
We have heard tell, that in the old days, owners
would remove the wheels and soak them up in the
stock tank. Having neither stock nor a tank nearby I
did the next best thing and set up a water hose
arrangement that would supply water to the wheels
without removal (see picture). I allowed a half an
hour of soaking per wheel. The squeaking and rust
dusting has stopped and they seem much tighter when
the car is shaken, but the fact that no style of
torque wrench that I own or know of, would tell me
how tight, I trust on the feel of the car when
underway, combined with the slower speeds we drive
to keep us on the road, knowing that a failing wheel
usually provides early warning to an experienced
motorist.
Editors Note: This subject has been brought up many times
in our forum so we especially appreciate our long time
contributor to Antique Automobile's expertise.
Thanks Tom!
We encourage
anecdotes, photos, short stories and information about our
members and/or their vehicles that may be of interest to
other AACA Members.

Headquarters Starting
Grid...
In our last issue, we introduced Chris Ritter, our new
AACA Librarian! We decided to continue starting grid
introductions and feature an additional Headquarters
staff member in each
SPEEDSTER issue... allowing you to
get to know our names, our roles here at National and a
little about our interests.
As always, the
entire staff here at the AACA National Headquarters
and Library & Research Center are ready to take the
green flag and assist you!
Meet Pat Frantz!
When you phone AACA National Headquarters, chances are the
first voice you will hear is that of Pat Frantz, who will
also warmly greet and welcome you when you visit us in
Hershey, Pennsylvania. In addition to a wide range of
administrative duties, Pat is responsible for distributing
mail and handling insurance certificate requests received
from our Regions/Chapters as well as fielding and
directing specific member inquires. With over 29 years of
devoted service to AACA, Pat is certainly well equipped to
provide helpful guidance!
Pat particularly enjoys connecting with AACA members, "I
genuinely appreciate our members' friendship, kindness and
their cooperative nature when I assist them with questions
and requests."
On a personal note, Pat is a native Pennsylvanian, an avid
reader with a great appreciation for the Arts/Theatre and
an animal-lover, most especially her dear cat, Jasmine.
When not working, she tries to
 make
time to attend classical musical concerts and plays. Pat
has a daughter, a son and a 3-year old grandson named
Zackery.

"Hershey" DVD
The production crew from the
TV series MyCarFever has
produced a unique video covering the
2008 Eastern Division Fall Meet. It is very
nicely done and covers the gamut from opening day through
Friday. The crowds were so huge on Saturday that it
stopped filming cold!
We have viewed the film and really enjoyed it! Lots of
fun interviews, great coverage of the flea market and car
corral! Some spectacular overhead shots from atop the
Giant Center give the best views ever seen! Trying to
give someone an idea of just how big 'Hershey" is has just
been made easier! This video would be great for region
meetings or even as a possible recruitment tool. Buying
the DVD would be cheaper than a night out at the movies
and more entertaining!
Please visit
www.mycarfever.com
to order your own copy now! You won't regret it!
