Get the '09 Scottsdale
results here!
Despite fearsome woes in the general economy, including a drastic
drop in new car sales, sales in collectible cars are doing just fine,
thank you. Auction Editor Ron Kowalke was in the Scottsdale, Ariz. area
to get a first-hand look at the benchmark of collectible car auctions,
and came away feeling optimistic. Ron offers his perspective, as well as
the auction results for January 2009.

'Wing King' flew into
racing history
In the 1960s, Chrysler and Ford spent hundreds of thousands of
dollars to dominate stock car racing in NASCAR, ARCA and USAC. Chrysler
did not take losing lightly, so when push came to shove, they went to
flight school. The result was a uniquely styled, aerodynamic speed demon
they called the Daytona. As one current owner says, driving the Daytona
"is like going down the road with a naked woman on the hood. Everybody
does a double take and turns and stares!"

'58 Bonneville was
long, lean muscle machine
To celebrate General Motors' 50th anniversary, a Tri-Power
Bonneville convertible was picked to be the Official Pace Car for the
Indy 500 race in May 1958. It had an aircraft look and all 16 models
carried "guided-missile" side trim and "jet-pod" rear fenders, making a
grand departure from original Bonneville styling.

Dreaming of '57 Chevys

Van Bogart is still fantasizing about someday owning a '57 Bel Aire

stumbled across a yard that may have had the answer to his dreams.

Packard had its share
of hardy haulers
Packard was well known for its luxury car line, but in the early
1900s, a line of Packards was also packing the goods. A look at why the
line of heavy haulers was so popular it became a major supplier for
American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, and why the line died out.

The controversial
Tucker convertible on its way to completion
In case you haven't heard, last week Old Cars Weekly broke
the news that an incomplete topless Tucker had been purchased by
Benchmark Classics of Madison, Wis. and was finally being finished. This
week we returned to take a peek under the covers, and to continue the
quest for where the car, with a highly debated pedigree, actually
originated.

Granny banned from
driving for 1,000 years!
An 84-year-old grandmother from England was recently banned from
driving until the year 3000...although it is doubtful that she will end
up behind the wheel even then.
It appears that the less than friendly granny was well know to the
magistrate in her local court where she had apparently appeared 78 times
over an ongoing feud with her neighbors.

The legendary Tucker:
Razzle, dazzle and fizzle
The
Tucker automobile was seemingly a can't-miss proposition. "Nearly 1,700
stockholders gave unanimous approval to the Tucker program and then
watched the first Tucker production car put through its paces in the
84-acre manufacturing building, assuring themselves that it reverses
perfectly and performs like a champion." Thus stated the official press
release from the Tucker Corp. at 7401 South Cicero Avenue in Chicago.
Somehow, as interesting and innovative as the Tucker was, it never got
off the ground. Today, Tucker survivors are great collector prizes, but
the car was still one of the great flops of its time.

France wants 'historic'
car back from U.S. collector
The U.S. government wants Charles Morse's car, because the French
government considers it a national treasure. The Seattle car collector
says he wants to be reimbursed for his one-of-a-kind 1919 Turcat-Mery
touring car.
Morse said that J. Braam Ruben of Find Automobiles in the Netherlands
sold him the vehicle, and that he did not know the car was protected as
a French national treasure.

In the '60s, Detroit
was thinking BIG!
Fans of the huge pre-war Classics may disagree, but the 1960s were
probably the golden age of the land yacht in the U.S. Every car maker
was rolling out huge luxury cars, many of which turned into landmark
cars of their era.
Indeed, the decade of the flower power, protests and space exploration
was also the decade of big iron in Detroit.

Packard was riding high
in 1937
1937
was a very good year for the Packard Motor Car Company. In fact, it was
its best.
Sales were hot. Styling was grand. Appointments were superb. Packard was
one of the most desired names in the public mind. This was the car to
adore and respect with legendary honors.
That especially was the case when Packard introduced its Six. With its
launch, the Packard name was accessible to anyone who could afford to
buy a new car.

**!#$!!&*!. Not another misguided 'Clunker Law'!
My
own interests in salvage yards are just one reason "clunker laws" really
strip my threads. And now, several years later, we're in imminent danger
of another "cash for clunkers" program. According to the SEMA Action
Network, lawmakers are expected to incorporate such a program as part of
an economic stimulus package by Jan. 6 and have it approved by Congress
Jan. 20.

Man Busted for Fuzzy Dice in Michigan
What the Heck?
Did you know that you could get a ticket in Michigan for simply
having a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from your rear-view mirror?
Anywho...I was surfing the web today and ran across an interesting
article about a poor sap that was pulled over and busted for the crime
of having a Tweedy Bird ornament dangling from his rear-view mirror. But
you really shouldn't feel too sorry for this guy...

Yee-haw! Collectors
still love their 'General Lees!'
The great, big ocean of MoPar enthusiasts includes some good ol'
boys devoted to one particular car – a bright orange 1969 Dodge Charger
with the numbers "01" on the doors and a Confederate flag emblazoned
across the roof. Oh, and a horn that plays "Dixie."
Yes, that Charger is the General Lee. Don't laugh! There are a lot of
guys who still dig these cars as much as we all dug Daisy Duke!
According to Roscoe P. Coltrane, this article just might just put a
"Quiver in your liver!"
