The 1961 Chrysler 300G
Car Life called the Chrysler 300G "the best road
car on the market." Chrysler called it "the brand-new 1961 version of
Chrysler's championship breed of rare motorcars. The 300G could do
0-to-60 mph in 8.4 seconds, and 0-to-100 mph in 21.2 seconds.
The quarter mile took a mere 16.2 seconds at 87.4 mph. Top speed of the
300G was reported by
Car Life to be 131 mph. At Daytona, a 300G
running with the optional 2.93:1 axle ratio won the NASCAR Flying Mile
Championship with a two-way average of 143.0 mph. A 300G also won the
NASCAR Standing Mile Championship with a speed of 90.7 mph.
No matter what you called it...there was no question that it was FAST!

Destined for Daytona: A
special ride to the starting line!
When
most people buy a new car off a dealer's lot, they use it to fetch
groceries, drive to work and carry their family to church. Not Bernie
Hentges. When the 22-year-old bought a gleaming new 1959 De Soto, it was
with one thing in mind — racing at the newly built Daytona International
Speedway. But a snowstorm complicated his journey from Minnesota to
Florida, so he did what he had to do: he drove his racing car all the
way to the race track.

What's the REAL story
behind that "rare" LaSalle truck
In
the March 12 issue, Old Cars Weekly featured a unique 1933 LaSalle truck
with the Henney coachbuilder's name stamped in the tailgate. In the
story, I pondered the history of the truck. Was it a funeral vehicle?
Was it a transporter for a Cadillac and LaSalle dealer? Was it Henney's
own in-plant vehicle? None of these turned out to be the case.

Country Classics owner
cultivating cars instead of crops
Country Classics, one of the nation's largest collector car
operations, was started 10 years ago by Russ Noel and his wife in
southern Illinois. The couple planned to split their time between
farming and peddling old cars.
That arrangement lasted a few years, but the car business, which started
on the family's Edwardsville farm, ballooned and became too big to
handle as a part-time gig.

Saga of the EX-122
For
decades, the car has been known as EX-122. It's part of the Kerbeck
Brothers' collection in Atlantic City, N.J. It is the car in which the
first V-8 was developed for the Corvette, but this car may also be the
famous GM Motorama Corvette. If so, it's the very car displayed at the
Waldorf Astoria Hotel, in New York City, in January of 1953.
We also have some evidence that EX-122, although built for show, was the
car that Chevrolet counted as the first of the 300 Corvettes numbered
for the 1953 model year.

The 1930 Cadillac V-16 Fleetwood
America was sliding into an economic disaster called the Great
Depression when the 1930 Cadillacs arrived in September 1929. The
Cadillac V-8 was enlarged to 353 cubic inches, which created a new
Series 353 line. But in December came the big news: Cadillac management
announced that a new line powered by a 452-cubic-inch V-16 was being
readied for the New York Automobile Salon in January 1929. A
five-passenger Imperial Landau Sedan was the only car actually exhibited
at that venue. The V-16 utilized a 148-inch wheelbase. But before long,
an array of 54 semi-custom body styles by Fleetwood were available.
Thus the famed Cadillac V-16 was born.

recent issue of the Old Cars Weekly E-mail Restoration Series. This
10-part series will will contain how-to articles and photos providing

Issue 2: Sheet Metal Basics
Sheet metal work falls into two realms: manual arts and technical
skills. The strategies for and operations of removing complex
deformations (a.k.a. "dents") from sheet metal body parts are so
variable as to make choosing between them an art in itself.
There is usually no single correct approach to such a complex task, and
various approaches may produce virtually equal results. Of course, there
are also numerous substandard or incorrect approaches to this work that
can hide original damage while actually producing further, hidden
damage.
The result of all of this is that good sheet metal work requires a study
of basic technical factors, experience in the actual work and
imagination and ingenuity in approaching some of the more difficult
problems posed by sheet metal repair.

Car of the Week: The 1970 LS6 Chevelle
Only the good die young. The "bad" cars like the SS 396 kept going,
but sometimes even they had to make adjustments to keep up with the
competition. By 1970, the SS 396 was becoming a classic. It had been
around since 1966 and was no longer the fastest muscle car in town. To
keep the Chevelle in the muscle car race, Chevy had to do something
drastic in 1970. The result was the legendary SS 454 LS6 option —
probably the king of the jungle when it comes to classic muscle cars.
