Hampton Roads Opens New Convention Center Road
HVPR President Tim Buris was invited to be part of the "ribbon cutting" ceremony upon the opening of the new access road at the $100 million dollar Convention Center complex. Tim drove his 1931 Ford Model A Tudor with the Honorable Hampton City Mayor, Mr. Ross A. Kearney, II, as his passenger, thus being the first vehicle to access the new road. This will allow traffic to enter at Convention Center Boulevard & Armistead and travel to Coliseum Drive. |

HVPR Members supported the Warwick High School's drive to buy new uniforms for the school's marching band. This was done by attending their first car show. In the "Good ‘Ol Days" of yesteryear, high school marching bands were funded almost totally by the school budget. Not so today! A concerned parent and "band booster", Mr. Paul Burgener, contacted Hal and Dick, and asked their assistance in organizing and conducting a car show to raise funds to buy uniforms and other much needed equipment for the Warwick High School Marching Band, the "Raiders". With over 70 cars in attendance, their very first car show, complete with their own well-run food vending operation, was a grand success. Look for it next year, and don’t miss it! |

The Newport News Fire Department sent over their antique fire truck in support of the event (left). The truck operator’s big mascot (rt) would not be left behind, and spent most of the day showing off his very own NNFD tee-shirt! He greeted many of the kids with a big lick! |

The Frontier Culture Museum was the site of 2004's 51st Annual Old Dominion Meet, hosted by the Waynesboro-Staunton Region (21 - 22 May 2004). In the background is the old abandoned buildings of the State Institution. The city is currently working on plans to restore the buildings, or to completely remove the structures.

After the trade show was over, they "wheeled" several of the cars into the Awards Banquet room for the evening's festivities. Later, we saw how the hotel got these lovely vehicles up to this third floor level. The hotel's freight elevators for the ballroom are large enough to take one car at a time, even the Duesenburg. Unfortunately, I did not have the camera in hand to catch them being moved back downstairs after the meeting.
The Veteran's Administration Hospital,
Hampton, Virginia

Once a year HVPR members bring their antique vehicles to the VA Hospital in Hampton, to spend the afternoon with the many veterans who have served this country. Other car clubs also join us for this most worthwhile event. Here are some pictures of our visit in July '03.
|
Representing HVPR was Dick Tarr's 1974 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe. |
|
Also representing HVPR was Jim Bostic's wonderful 1930 Model A Ford "Rosebud", a hit wherever he takes it, especially with the younger generation. |
|
Many of the veterans enjoyed viewing these vehicles up-close and personal, while receiving additional information from the owners. |
|
|
|
Several other car clubs from the area also participated.
|
|
The Triumph club brought several of their outstanding vehicles to display. |

This is our Vice President, Mr. Jim Bostic officiating at the "Totman - Williams" wedding as chauffeur. The couple's desire was to be driven about in a Packard Convertible. Our Past President, Mr. Lloyd Williams, who owns the Packard, eagerly offered his car for the occasion. Needless to say, Jim also stepped up to the task of chauffeur in fine style and he, and the car, were one of the highlights of the day for the handsome wedding couple and their guests. |

The happy couple being chauffeured by Jim as a photographer snaps memorable pictures.

The HVPR Banner was carried in the Yorktown 4th of July Parade in 2002 for the first time. We thank Zac Buris and Joanie Washburn for braving the heat (ah....youth!) to carry our banner, and hope this will be a club tradition at future parades. Great Job! |

The 4th Annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) (for Jerry's Kids) hosted another car show in Chester, VA on the 24th of August. Jeannette and Tim Buris are shown with a "Top 25" plaque for their neat '47 Plymouth. Great job, folks ! |

We gathered at the quaint Historic Village Parlor & Restaurant in Hilton Village for our August meeting on the 11th. After a very short business meeting, we adjourned inside where we met the challenges of several games of "eight-ball", drank lots of cool lemonade, and partook of the great sandwiches served by Connie Jones, the owner. Next, we . . .
|
|
. . . cut the lovely cake, provided and decorated by Connie and her staff. We had a great time, and look forward to a return visit soon. |

On August 17th, we gathered in front of Rick & Christy Crews' Marketplace Antiques Mall at Whitemarsh in celebration of their first anniversary in business. Shown is (l to r) Rex Frey's cool ' 70 Karmann Ghia, Boyd Sheppard's National First Prize winning ' 63 Dodge 4-dr, Ben Daniel's beautiful ' 65 Ford T-Bird, and Past Prez Lloyd Williams' awesome ' 53 Packard convertible. |
|
From the other direction, we see veteran member Duval Williams' great light blue ' 54 Pontiac 2-dr, and, in the foreground, Ed Proctor's neat ' 60 Studebaker Lark. |
|
|
|
Our last arrival for the day turned out to be Clay & Cheryl Drnec of Newport News in their rather rare, nice ' 63 Chevy Nova SS convertible. |
| As Rick Crews and the owner of the mall (back to us) discuss the important issues of the day, most of us can be see under the shelter sipping the lemonade generously provided by our host. Greg & Peter "D" arrived in their fabulous green '41 Plymouth Special Deluxe seen in the background. The "blue bomb" '74 Chevy Impala belongs to the Tarrs. |

This is a great shot of Mike French's fabulous 1927 American LaFrance fire truck "Francie". She saw active service in Suddlersville, MD between 1927 and 1962. Those that stayed after the RoundUp 2001 to help with the clean-up effort were treated to a ride on this old beauty. Even a family of four who came simply to admire the old cars were invited to, "Hop on, we're takin' it for a SPIN !" They were thrilled with the experience, and I'll bet they'll return for the 2002 RoundUp, too ! |

Pictured above are 9 of HVPR's 13 living Past Presidents. This valuable photo was taken at the 2002 RoundUp, held at Fort Monroe on September 7th. From left to right are Bob Sommers ('77-'78), Bob Baucom ('72-'73), Lloyd Williams ('96-'97), Buddy Fox ('70-'71), Bill Clarke ('81-'82 & '91), John Mitchell ('85-'86), Steve Peters ('79-'80), Melody Diamontopulos ('00-'01), and Don Baker ('76) |

Our past president ('96 - '97) Lloyd Williams and his lovely wife Dora proudly accepted their "Bob Baucum" award from HVPR President Dick Tarr during a General Membership meeting at Bill's Seafood Restaurant in Grafton, VA, on March 12, 2002. Congratulations to you both ! !
During our General Membership meeting on March 12, 2002
, Mr. Virgil Winslow of Smith's Florist in Phoebus presented a wonderful program on "Floral Design and Arrangements".
Mr. Winslow dazzled us with his artistry and talent while constructing many thoroughly beautiful floral arrangements. All were available for purchase following the evening's presentation.

HVPR's General Membership Meeting on October 6, 2002 at the Tarr's Home in Yorktown !
What a wonderful step back in time with a yard full of (mostly) antique cars!

Another view of the HVPR member cars that arrived for the meeting.
Lots of good food, friendship, and great cool weather!

NOTE: Sadly, Mable passed away and was laid to rest on January 8, 2008. We will always remember her wonderful sense of humor.
Hi Sweetie..... Give me a kiss on my "hot lips"
(Mable? Is that you???)
