General Membership Meeting

and St.Valentine's Day Party

 February 2006

Official Minutes of the General Meeting:

Introduction: The Historic Virginia Peninsula Region (HVPR) of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) met at 7 PM on Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at the King Buffet restaurant in the Denbigh section of Newport News. After the social hour, 35 members and 1 guest, Mrs. Louise Munday, Nancy Garnett’s mother, were seated for the buffet dinner.

Call to Order & The Blessing: Preceding the meal, President Tim Buris called the meeting to order at 7:02 PM. Chap. Anastasia Cassidy offered a Valentine’s blessing.

Welcome & Personal Announcements: Pres. Buris welcomed all members and guests. He offered congratulations to Terry Ward, celebrating his birthday on February 19th. Don Baxter announced that he had recently secured a few additional vehicles from a "barn find" near Philadelphia. Pres. Buris’ newly acquired Ford Model A pickup truck was one of those "barn fresh" vehicles.

Old Business:

1. The AACA’s 70th Annual General Membership meeting was attended by the Buris’, Drnecs, and Tarrs. Pres. Buris explained how he ran over a piece of Philly scrap iron on Rt. 95 northbound. After "holing" the bumper of Jeannette’s new vehicle, it noisily exited to the rear. He further told of the snowstorm on the trip back to Virginia.

2. Pres. Buris offered congratulations to the Auto Tidings editor and Webmaster Elaine Tarr, who was recognized twice during the AACA awards banquet on Saturday night. She was presented with her awards on a stage with a 20 foot high projection of the Auto Tidings newsletter, and then the current home page of our HVPR website. Pres. Buris declared that it was quite impressive.

3. Pres. Buris stated that Clay Drnec also participated in the AACA meeting as one of the speakers in a "My Favorite Chevrolet" seminar. His portion covered the Chevy Nova, and was well received.

4. Pres. Buris stated that VP Beth Hartel is open to suggested meeting locations and programs. He further stated that the March 14th meeting will be held at Steve’s Steakhouse at 11847 Jefferson Avenue. The guest speaker will be Mr. John Quarstein, the director of the Virginia War Museum in Newport News.

5. Pres. Buris announced that the next RoundUp Committee meeting will be at 7 PM on March 27th at Dale Bray’s place of business, 337 Redoubt Road in Yorktown. Mr. Bray has graciously offered his offices in which to hold this and future board meetings, if the club so desires.

6. No old business was presented by the membership.

New Business:

1. Pres. Buris announced that Dale Bray has volunteered to be the HVPR RoundUp Chairman. Dale has a wealth of experience in event planning and coordination. He has previously been involved in Seafest, a fundraiser featuring a trade show and seafood fest at the Hampton Coliseum for the Va. Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (VPCC), the Homes & Gardens Expo for the Peninsula Housing & Builders Association (PHBA), and Denbigh Days for the Denbigh Lions Club. The Homes & Gardens Expo is held at the Hampton Convention Center featuring about 200 booths with a 10,000 yearly attendance. Denbigh Days is a fundraiser for the Denbigh Lions Club with a parade, a festival, and wide-spread community support. Pres. Buris stated that although Dale has never organized a car event, his experience and new ideas can only be helpful.

2. Pres. Buris announced that he would like to try to improve the automotive knowledge of our club members by asking them to volunteer some historical vehicle knowledge at each meeting. He said that since many of the club members are so keen on automotive history, he would like to call on them to step forward and share that knowledge. Pres. Buris began the first of this new series by introducing a small car model of a 1940 Cleveland automobile. He explained the car’s origin and other significant details in it’s history. Mr. Howard Hodnett volunteered to make a presentation at the March meeting.

3. Pres. Buris offered the floor to ODMA Pres. Dick Tarr. The AACA’s new Deep River Region has petitioned the ODMA for membership. There has been much discussion due to its physical location in North Carolina, mostly centered around the ODMA’s past policy of keeping its membership solely from AACA Virginia regions. Mr. Tarr opened the floor for a short discussion period. He then requested that the membership vote "yes" or "no" for initiating a by-laws change to allow the NC region to be accepted into the ODMA. Dr. Madison Price motioned to accept the AACA’s Deep River Region into the ODMA as a combined "yes" vote from the HVPR. The motion was seconded by Jim Bostic, and carried nearly unanimously. Mr. Tarr thanked the membership, further stating that the voting results would be presented at the ODMA planning meeting on February 20th.

4. No new business was presented by the membership.

Program: Hostess Beth Hartel and her committee made the table decorations consisting of small vases of individual silk flowers with a hand-made fabric heart. She also prepared several heart-shaped coffee cups filled with flowers with a helium "heart" balloon affixed thereto. After the evening’s King & Queen were crowned (Sara & Tommy Hunt), members played 3 bingo games, each winner receiving a $25 Olive Garden restaurant gift certificate. Winners were Helen Mitchell (4 corners), Terry Ward (straight), and Judy Bray (coverall). Tim Buris interspersed a personal car quiz throughout the games.

Event & Meeting Announcements: deleted for space

Raffle Drawing: Winner was Dr. Madison Price.

Closing Remarks: Pres. Buris thanked everyone for coming, thanked VP Hartel for her efforts, and stated that he looked forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting.

Adjournment: Approximately 9:10 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Elaine J. Tarr, Interim Secretary
