Harford Region's 2002 Icicle Run was held on March 16. A total of 43 adults and 3
young people attended the event. Tour directors Pat and Bill led the group in their
1947 Cadillac. Other antique cars driven included a 1958 Buick, 1941 Plymouth, 1956
Ford Thunderbird, 1966 Ford Thunderbird, 1965 ford Galaxie, 1970 Cadillac, 1950 Ford, and
two 1931 Fords. Some members chose to drive their modern iron due to
questionable weather.
Leaving Dave's Family Restaurant in Conowingo, Maryland, the group proceeded into
Pennsylvania to a "Mystery Stop". The "Mystery Stop" was at
Honey Brook Classics in Honey Brook, Pa. Honey Brook classics if a private
collection of approximately 30 vehicles owned by Mr. Ray Carr. The beautiful cars
include a 1902 Baker Electric and a 1909 Stanley Steamer, both of which were driven across
the United states by Mr. Carr. There is also a 1939 Ford that he drove around
the world. The most unusual car displayed had to be a 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible
with right hand drive!
The group then headed towards the Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl. The group enjoyed
a delicious lunch from a smorgasbord that includes a 40-item salad bar, 140-foot bar of
delicious Pennsylvania dutch selections, 14 different beverage selections, and
approximately 25 dessert choices. Many of the group later ventured downstairs to the
enormous gift shop that has something for everyone.
The Cadillac limousine did not want to start as the group prepared to leave the
smorgasbord. A flooded carburetor was diagnosed as the culprit, and the car was soon
running. the group drove to New Holland where the visited Kauffman's Hardware Store.
The store has been a part of the community since 1779 and is New Holland's oldest
place of business. A jail dating to the 1860s is located in the basement. The
next stop was at the Kitchen Kettle Village where the group browsed among the various
shops. The village began as a garage business making jellies, but eventually grew into the
32 shops and lodging accommodations present today.
Late in the afternoon, the group traveled together back t o Harford County, where the
members then departed individually towards their respective homes. A big thanks to
Bill and Pat for a fun-filled day!
