HARFORD REGION VISITS LANCASTER COUNTY,
PENNSYLVANIA DURING 2001 FALL RUN

Harford Region held their annual Fall Run during September 15-16, 2001. The destination for this year’s weekend tour was Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Early on Saturday morning, the participants met at Dave’s Family Restaurant in Conowingo Maryland to begin the trip. Each car received a goodie bag, plus a Harford Region AACA flag. In addition, many of the cars flew American flags to show their patriotism.

The caravan left Conowingo and proceeded northeast towards Gap, Pennsylvania. Along the route, the participants looked for clues to the Hunt Cup questions. The caravan stopped in Gap for a rest break at Burger King before continuing towards Paradise and Schwalm’s Babbit and Engine Repair. Schwalm’s rebuilds several types of antique car engines but specializes in Model A Ford engines. The group was greeted by Mrs. Schwalm and the shop manager Ora Landis, who gave tours of the shop.

The group then drove northward to Intercourse and toured the Intercourse Pretzel Factory. Everyone saw how the pretzels were made and had a chance to twist their own pretzel. Those successfully twisting a pretzel received a sticker naming them as Official Pretzel Twisters. Afterwards, the group traveled to the Family Cupboard Restaurant for a buffet lunch.

The caravan then headed back towards Paradise where it stopped at the Best Western motel for the night. After time to unpack and relax, the group walked to the nearby Rainbow Dinner Theater where a production of Agatha Christie’s "Spider Web" was playing. The group enjoyed another delicious buffet dinner with complimentary wine as they watched the show.

Following breakfast on Sunday morning, the caravan left Paradise and traveled to the National Christmas Museum. The museum contains Christmas related items from over the years. Santa himself greeted the group and had his picture taken with the members. Upon exiting the National Christmas Museum, the tour directors had snacks and drinks for the group to enjoy under a nearby tree.

The group then headed towards Smoketown and stopped at the Good and Plenty Restaurant to see owner Chris Lapp’s collection of automobiles. Mr. Lapp greeted the group and took them on a tour of his outstanding collection of primarily General Motors products from the 1940s through 1970s.

Because the day was proceeding ahead of schedule, the tour directors decided to take the group on a scenic drive along some little traveled back roads of southern Lancaster County. The route continued to the Peach Bottom Inn in Delta for the final meal of the weekend. The delicious meal was followed by the presentation of the Early Bird, Hunt Cup, and Hard Luck Awards. Following the closing ceremonies, everyone departed towards their home and another successful Fall Run was completed.
