Back
Road Notes
by
Jack Armstrong
Guess the cold
weather is behind us now. Sorry that the April Dust-off had to be
cancelled. The mud season seems to have been short. Time to get
those antiques on the road. I've heard that we'll be getting a two-year
inspection in NH for antique cars.
Don't know any
facts yet. If members are up on this, let's try to spread the real
story.
In
March, I went to the Florida Region Winter Meet in Orlando and attended
an interesting meeting on the new Driver Participation Class that
AACA has begun. About 30 cars were brought out at the Orlando meet
that would not have been shown without this new class. Its purpose
is to get cars at shows that might otherwise be seen only on tours.
Each car is "evaluated for visual authenticity". It appears that
alterations which don't change the car's overall original appearance
are okay. Hydraulic brake conversions, electric starters on a brass
car, or a fiberglass reproduction door are examples of items that
I understood are acceptable in this class. I expect this DPC category
to grow in participation.
Other
events I managed to attend were a Kingdom of the Sun Region (Ocala)
car show in conjunction with a horse-drawn carriage competition,
the Mount Dora wooden boat & woody car show & a pre-WWII
car weekend tour and show, also in Mt. Dora. I recommend these annual
activities for anyone who happens to be in Florida at that time
of year.
Now,
I encourage everyone to come to our first Annual Meeting on May
31st. Come prepared to discuss your ideas of shows, tours, etc.
for our Region. Also, we need members who want to plan and manage
activities, so don't be bashful, speak right up! Looking forward
to seeing you soon.

Granite
Region Banner
By
Jack Griffiths
Our Granite
Region Newsletter is known as The Granite Banner. However, there
is another Granite Region Banner which will be displayed for the
first time at the May 31st Annual Meeting at the Armstrong's home
in Meredith.
As you know,
the Granite Region logo shows the profile of the Old Man of the
Mountain. Sadly, we lost this ancient and revered New Hampshire
icon on Saturday, May 3, 2003.
To carry on
the legacy of the state's most recognized symbol, the new Granite
Region Banner will continue to proudly display the profile image
of "The Great Stone Face".
Dash Plaques:
In addition
to seeing the new banner, attendees at the Annual Meeting will get
a dash plaque to commemorate the event.
There will be
plenty to go around, and we hope to have as many members as possible
attend the meeting.
See you there!

Granite
Region Membership Report
The response
to the first newsletter was excellent. About 75 membership forms
were returned which brings the dues-paid members list to 104 names
(including spouses). Especially encouraging were the additional
contributions to bolster the reserve fund. I am delighted to report
that the "treasury" can support Granite Region activities, the newsletter,
and other costs comfortably through next year.
A full Treasurer's
Report will be presented at the May 31st Annual Meeting. Several
extra copies of this second newsletter will be printed and include
a membership form to be distributed at local antique car events
with the objective of increasing Granite Region participation even
further.
A special thanks
goes out to all Granite Region members for their commitment and
generosity.

GRANITE
REGION MID-SUMMER TOUR
JOHN
MOIR'S
"A
TO Z" COLLECTION
and
MADISON BOULDER
JULY
19, 2003 [Rain or Shine]
John Moir has
one of the most extensive and interesting antique car collections
you will ever see. John calls it the "A to Z" Collection because
he has at least one automobile beginning with each letter of the
alphabet. From A/Cs to a Zoe Zipper, John has them all and will
enthusiastically explain their history and how he acquired them.
You don't want to miss this opportunity to see something you probably
have never seen, or will ever see again: cars from A to Z.
The plan is
to arrive at John's home in Chocorua around the NOON hour. Please
bring your own picnic type lunch and beverages. We'll enjoy lunch
with conversation and then John will show us around his garage and
describe his fabulous fleet. There will be ample time for questions
and photos. Departure time is anticipated for mid-afternoon.
In order to
make it a full day, you may want to stop by Madison Boulder, which
is just a short distance from John's home on Route 113 in Madison,
NH. Madison Boulder is one of the largest (and most accessible)
"erratics" as they are called in the northeast. It is an impressive
83' long x 23' high and 37' wide. Now, that's a big boulder!! This
area was acquired by the State of New Hampshire in 1946 and was
designated a National Natural Landmark as part of the U.S. Dept.
of Interior in 1970. It is open year-round for visitors.
All in all,
it should be a great day with a nice opportunity to stretch the
legs of your favorite four-wheels, see an interesting site, view
a great car collection, and mix with fellow car nuts.
We would like
to know how many people will be coming, so please phone or email
either:
Jack Armstrong
603-279-0996 (jcarbarn@aol.com)
or
Jack Griffiths
603-472-4990 (jackdgriffiths@hotmail.com).
*Look
for more information
on
the Granite Region website as
the
time nears. See you there.*

Tax
Help Needed
Granite
Region and Taxes
- Are you a
tax expert? The Granite Region needs a volunteer who is familiar
with tax exempt regulations and can donate some time to file forms
for the "club" to obtain tax exempt status.
- Under the
current rules, the Region would apply for 501 [c] 7 status as
a fraternal organization. We have the forms and would greatly
appreciate help in completing them and forwarding the material
to the IRS.
Please contact
either: Jack Griffiths (472-4990) or Jack Armstrong (279-0996).
Many thanks in advance for your interest and assistance.

Fall
Classic Foliage Tour
September
27, 2003
by
Bart Carlson
A
jointly sponsored AACA/LOC tour is being planned by Jack Armstrong,
President of the Granite Region, and Bart Carlson, Vice President
of the Lincoln Owners Club and Granite Region member.
The fall Classic
Tour on September 27 has been scheduled to coincide with the peak
Fall colors and to fit nicely between two major events, the Glidden
Tour and Hershey.
The Fall Classic
tour will originate in the Lakes Region of NH and will cover about
150 miles of beautiful scenery in the White Mountains. Although
it is planned as a one-day event for those in the area, reservations
have already been blocked out for out-of-town participants who prefer
to spend the entire weekend in New Hampshire. Since motel and B&B
rooms in the area are usually booked solid more than a year in advance,
early reservations are important.
The Fall Classic
is intended for cars built between 1925-1948 that have been accepted
as true classics by the Classic Car Club of America. If there are
any questions about the eligibility of your car or you desire more
information about the Fall Classic Foliage Tour, you should contact
Bart Carlson at 603-253-3440.

that fall under the umbrella of the AACA. With such a vast network,
they can sponsor car meets, swaps, shows and tours to exhaust the

One
major tour, the Glidden Tour, dates back to 1905. It will be celebrating
its 58th run from September 14-19, 2003, in a tour around Madison,
Alabama.
The
AACA Library is a great resource center. On the AACA website, you
will find a request fom to use for initiating such research for
your own questions.

Year
of Manufacture Law
by
Gerry Griffin
Most of us have
seen Massachusetts Antique Autos displaying Year of Manufacture
(YOM) license plates; but did you know New Hampshire also has a
YOM law? Many states have passed YOM laws that allow an antique
vehicle to be registered using a vintage license plate from the
same year the vehicle was manufactured. These laws vary somewhat
from state to state. In New York and California, for instance, a
pair of plates is mandated, while Massachusetts requires only a
single plate to be displayed on the rear of the vehicle.
Under a typical
YOM law, the vintage plate is treated as a "TYPE" just as a Commercial
Plate might be treated. Within the YOM type, each number must be
unique and that number becomes the vehicles registration number.
Thus if someone has used a 1931 license plate number 494 for a 1931
vehicle registration, no other YOM registration can use that number
even if it is for a different year vehicle.
New Hampshire's
YOM law (RSA 261:89-a) does not fit the regular pattern and may
be unique among such laws. In fact some might argue it is not a
true YOM law at all. In New Hampshire, the antique vehicle continues
to be registered with Antique Auto license plates issued by the
DMV. The vehicle is identified by that Antique Auto license number
and one plate must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. With
the permission of the Director of Motor Vehicles, a vintage YOM
plate may be run on the front of the vehicle. The number on the
plate does not become the vehicles registration number, but rather
a second means of identifying the vehicle.
The process
is simple: find a suitable vintage plate and send the Director a
request identifying the year, make and ID number of your Antique
vehicle, along with the vehicle's current Antique Auto registration
number. Include the year (must be the same as the vehicle's) and
number of the vintage plate you wish to display on the front of
your vehicle. If no one else is using the number, you should have
approval within days. Antique vehicles, motorcycles, and trailers
qualify for New Hampshire YOM registration.

Climb
to the clouds
July
8-12, 2004
The
auto road up Mount Washington has challenged many drivers and their
vehicles, starting with Mr. and Mrs. Freelan O. Stanley, who made
the first motorized ascent in August of 1899.
Automakers,
eager to prove their vehicles' durability, started the "Climb
to the Clouds' race in 1904. This predates the Indianapolis 500
and is recognized as the oldest motors sports event in America.
Next year (2004) will be the 100th anniversary of this historic
race on Mt. Washington via the auto road.
The
five-day event will include all sorts of activities for antique
and modern automobiles. A vintage car time trial up the Auto Road,
a vintage car show, driving tours and fireworks are among the events
planned. Tentative thoughts are for an area tour and drive to the
top followed by a picnic or barbeque at the summit. This event should
be great fun with prizes and memorabilia.
