A Brief History of the Deep South Region AACA

On January 19, 1967, twenty-nine Mobile area antique car buffs organized and applied for a charter in the national Antique Automobile Club of America.  The petition was approved in February 1967 and a charter was issued on March 7, 1967. The Deep South Region was born. By 1982, the Deep South Region had grown to the point it was difficult to find meeting rooms large enough to accommodate the 50 to 65 members attending the monthly meetings. Increasing liability insurance was causing many companies with rooms large enough for us to restrict the rooms for company use only. This is understandable as we are in the same position today with the clubhouse building. The Deep South Region had to make a move to get room and in 1984 we  found a 2.2 acre tract of  land  at the  corner of Forest Hill Drive and Zeigler Boulevard. It was leased from the City of  Mobile. An old kindergarten schoolhouse, which had to be moved due to new construction, was found. The club acquired it and had it moved onto our new property.

It was renovated by the membership without going into debt. The Deep South Region had a beautiful clubhouse in an outstanding location. Today, we are an extremely active club with enthusiastic members. We have recently expanded the clubhouse to provide more room for meetings and other events.
A regular meeting is held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 P.M. in the clubhouse which is located at 951 Forest Hill Drive in Mobile, Alabama. An annual car show is held on the clubhouse grounds the Saturday before Mother’s Day each year.  An outing is planned monthly and in December of each year, an annual Christmas party along with the installation of the new officers is held. Probably the greatest pleasure of antique car ownership is the fellowship and spirit of cooperation of helping each other with restorations and in touring together. Owing an antique car is not a requirement to be a member of the Deep South Region or the Antique Automobile Club of America. It is a requirement that one belong to the Antique Automobile Club of America in order to be a member of the Deep South Region.  Local dues are $15.00.
