It was my first "at bat" as an officer of
the day for the AACA and I arrived extra early in my 1955 DeSoto
to be ready for the days action. My instructions were to bring cardboard to
place under each car, bring soda and water in a cooler, record everyone who came
and what car they were showing. I met with the security officer, Reginald, and
we quickly came up with a plan on where to park the cars. In they came, one at a
time between 10 and noon till we had ten antique cars on display at the Port
Discovery car show on Market Place. Anyone who took an interest in my
DeSoto quickly became the recipient of a flyer advertising the All DeSoto show
in Westminster on July 16. (shameless plug!)
The cars filled up the brick courtyard and by noon
the shade was gone and the courtyard was full of cars! The steady crowd of
viewers seemed to enjoy the cars ranging in age from 1914 to 1969. Dr Loy
Zimmerman's 1914 Model T
is always a crowd pleaser! He delights in allowing children to sit in the buggy
seats for a memorable photograph taken by the kids parents. On the way in from
Catonsville, Doc came to the rescue of a distraught motorist with his trusty
fire extinguisher. While most club members kept their safety equipment in their
trunks, Doc put his to good use!
Another big hit was Tom Black's 1967 Plymouth police
car
!
He even made an arrest or two (in fun). Jim and Ruth Synodinos took the spot
furthest from the road, but maybe got the best spot in terms of the best shade!
Their 1941 Packard
won the Sponsor's Choice award!
There was always a crowd around Ron & Julie
Siegrist's 1966 Cadillac !
Also true for Don Rhine's 1940 Buick
.
Many "old car" stories were told around these two cars!
A big help to the club was a potential new member,
Edwin Januszkipwicz, and his 1964 Pontiac .
Edwin helped get the cars parked with attention to putting cardboard under the
cars to collect any drips. Sorry Ed, I forgot one of the letters in your last
name! At least I got 13 of the 14 correct!
The most striking car had to be Dr. Jerry Ross' 1954
Kaiser
!
He keeps it show room new! We thought President Harry Wilhelm was the last to
arrive in his 1968 Ford Falcon
.
That was until John and Rick Gambo arrived in their 1969 Lincoln Mark III
.
Port Discovery generously handed out tickets for free admission. A few from our group took them up on the offer. The heat was getting to the members, so we handed out the dash plaques and presented the security guard with one, too, in appreciation for the fine job he did for the club. There was a slow orderly exit and everyone was gone by 4 PM after cleaning up the area.
