HOWARD COUNTY FAIR SHOW 2005

By Tom Young, Chief Judge

The Club's annual car show at the Howard County Fair on Sunday, August 7th was very successful in spite of challenging weather. When we arrived after 8:00 AM to set up the registration tents, there was a threatening cloud cover and we anticipated a wet day. Well, this is our 50th Anniversary and every CRAACA event so far this year has had great weather.

And at the Fair on Sunday, the Club's weather karma was good. The whole morning was quite overcast, somewhat humid and a little warm, but nary a drop of moisture. Just after noon the sun started breaking through. We had many entrants report that it was raining, off and on, to the east both north and south of Baltimore.

Threatening weather held attendance down. However, there were several unusual vehicles entered and, in general, the quality was excellent. This is the second year of participant judging and it worked very well keeping the entrants involved in walking the show field, looking at all the vehicles, and selecting their choices in the 14 classes. This seems to create a lot of camaraderie among show participants.

The most unusual vehicle on the show field was CR member Dan Banks' 1933 Datsun Fire Truck and the Japanese fire memorabilia that he has collected. There was a crowd of spectators around this display the whole day. Tim Smith entered his 1954 Kaiser-Darrin, a low production roadster that is rarely seen at shows. All eras were represented, from Bob Moore's 1915 Ford Model T, to several Ford Model As, some luxury cars of the 30s, a good showing of 60s and 70s pony and muscle cars, and nine trucks.

Club members who showed cars were: Ed Allen, '57 Chevrolet; Harold Allen, '49 Ford; Dan Banks, '33 Datsun; Dave Benson, '47 Lincoln; Tom Black, '67 Plymouth; Larry Butcher, '38 Lincoln; Ed Butler,'32 Buick; Franklin Gage,'51 Chevrolet; Paul Habicht, '61 Cadillac; Bob Johannessen, '63 Studebaker Avanti; Randy Moss, '66 Ford Mustang; Don Rhine, '40 Buick; Richard Ridinger, '58 Triumph; Jerry Ross, '54 Kaiser; Frank Ruehl, '32 Chrysler; Chuck Talbert, '39 Ford; Harry Wilhelm, '68 Ford; and Jason Willis, '63 Ford.

Thanks to Club members who helped make the annual car show a success: Jerry Gordon and Dan Materazzi, registration; Al Lawson and Harry Wilhelm, parking; Paul Habicht, Franklin Gage, and Ted Schneider, membership solicitation; plus other members who helped with various tasks. And it appears that the Club gained at least three new members at the show.
