Day Three

The next morning I set off for Columbus, stopping along the way at Newark, OH to see that station. It is skillfully restored and maintained by The Foundations, an amalgamation of local community and historical organizations. A volunteer, named Penny, showed me around the beautifully restored interior. I got a great shot of the exterior before heading for Columbus Photo15.jpg (54189 bytes).

There is not much left related to the PRR in Columbus, with one interesting exception: the old Port Columbus airport terminal. This was the transfer station for the short-lived transcontinental rail-air service, which the PRR introduced in 1929, in connection with Trans America Transport, a predecessor of TWA. Passengers boarded a train in New York and rode overnight to a newly constructed rail station, also called Port Columbus. They walked a short distance to the airport terminal Photo17.jpg (56698 bytes) and boarded a Ford Tri-motor for a daytime flight to Waynoka, OK, en route to Los Angeles via an overnight train ride on the Santa Fe to Clovis, NM and a daytime flight from there. Amazingly, the original airport terminal building, along with some contemporary hangers, still exists. I located the airport, and found the old terminal building. It is nicely preserved and is used as the engineering office. The Panhandle tracks are visible across the road behind it.

After a stop for lunch, I took off on I-71 for Cincinnati, arriving at the Best Western-Springdale Photo18.jpg (78497 bytes) (in a northern suburb), where the meeting was to be held, in time to clean up the truck, and park it out front for the meeting. It sat there on display until Saturday evening.

The Destination

The Annual Meeting culminated on Saturday with a banquet in the rotunda Photo30.jpg (30943 bytes) of the former Cincinnati Union Terminal Photo19.jpg (37813 bytes), an art deco Photo29.jpg (34832 bytes) Photo24.jpg (23125 bytes) Photo27.jpg (33255 bytes) masterpiece that has become a center for several museums. This was the ultimate destination of my trip; the farthest the truck had ever been from home. I was pleased that things had gone so well. Arrangements had been made for the truck to be parked out front Photo21.jpg (45937 bytes) of the terminal for the evening. It had rained off and on throughout Friday and most of Saturday, but fortunately, the rain held off through Saturday evening. I arrived early and took the opportunity to pose the truck at various locations on the plaza in front of the station. It sat at the curb Photo22.jpg (44806 bytes), near the main entrance to the terminal throughout the evening. Having driven this far, it was a pleasing sight to see!
