Power Plant Show

By Jerry Gordon

The Club hosted an antique car show at the Power Plant on Saturday, April 29th in conjunction with the Baltimore Waterfront Festival.  This year’s festival on the west shore of the Inner Harbor featured the local stay of the Volvo round-the-world ocean racing ships and a visit from five tall ships.  The festival had continuous live entertainment, food, and ship tours.

On a superb day weather-wise, our cars were parked on the Power Plant’s inner courtyard, which is readily accessible from all the businesses on Market Place.  The Power Plant is in the east Inner Harbor near the Aquarium, so to generate spectator traffic they had full color handbills printed and distributed at the festival, which seemed to be effective.

The five tall ships docked for a few days each between  April  22  and  May 8.     Maryland  based Schooner  Sultana,  a reproduction  of  an 18th  century sailing ship, was in the harbor on April 29.  Sultana provides an outreach program where students can gain a greater appreciation for the history of Chesapeake Bay based sailing ships.

Tom Black arrived in an authentic antique Baltimore police cruiser, a 1968 Chevrolet Biscayne with a  high performance police special engine.  Besides having most of the original police equipment inside and in the trunk, Tom showed us the original dealer window sticker and sales materials from the city’s purchase.  This car is the perfect companion to his restored LAPD cruiser.

Members and guests participating in the show were: Dave Benson, 1947 Lincoln Continental; Kim Bathon & Tom Black, 1968 Chevrolet; Jerry Gordon, 1964 Lincoln; Paul Habicht, 1959 Cadillac; Dave & Rene Fry + Anne & Tom Kenney, 1955 DeSoto; Todd & Dan Materazzi, 1956 Corvette; Don Rhine, 1940 Buick; Jerry Ross, 1954 Kaiser; Allen Weinstein, 1941 Hupmobile; Chris & John Young, 1986 Cadillac; Tom Young, 1980 Plymouth; and Helen & Dr. Loy Zimmerman, 1914 Ford Model T.
