When I joined Chesapeake Region in 1964, George was already a member for three (3) years and was one of the most active members. I remember like it was only yesterday, when I first met George and his wife, Mary, at Chesapeake Region's summer picnic in July, 1964, at John Love's lovely home in Kingsville, Md. Here comes George and Mary up the drive in their 1903 Franklin, driven all the way from their home at 1920 Gwynn Oak Avenue. Well, talk about a grand entrance!
George was rather a short person and when he drove his 1932 Pierce Arrow Brougham, he could hardly see up to the windshield. It appeared that the Pierce Arrow was driving itself. A lot of people don't know this, but George's 1932 Pierce Arrow still is in the Baltimore area. It is owned by a man by the name of Gene Hamilton in Granite, Md. I saw it a few years ago, and it still looks sharp.
George rated a three column obituary, along with a
1960 photo of himself, in the January 17, 2004 issue of the Baltimore Sun. In
case you missed it, please send a SASE to J. Francis Werneth, 9701 Oak Summit
Avenue, Baltimore, Md. 21234, and I will be happy to send you a copy.
THE DIRECTOR'S CAR
By George Horn
The cover car for this month is a 1932 Pierce Arrow
Model 54 Club Brougham .
It is a large car with a wheelbase spanning 137 inches. Overall weight is 4,900
pounds, which is powered by an eight in line, 125 hp engine. Cradling this
weight and power are 7:00xl8 7-ply wide white tires.
This particular Pierce has such added attractions as free wheeling, syncro-mesh transmission and a ride control. The ride control is interesting in itself. A selection of soft or hard ride could be obtained by simply adjusting or pulling/pushing in on cables, which are in turn connected to each shock absorber.
The Pierce Arrow, which with its closed car styling, has given Mary and myself many happy miles since our purchase of it two years ago, Originally restored in Staunton, Virginia, the Pierce was advertised in Antique Automobile. I was very happy to be able to purchase it from the Staunton owner, after answering the ad.
Decor is beige with maroon wheels. Interior upholstery and carpet are also maroon.
