Streetcar Museum Show Kicks Off Season

By Jerry Gordon

The active car show season for our 51st year got underway at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum Spring Show, the Club’s traditional opening event, on Sunday, April 2nd.  This year’s turnout of 19 antique cars more than filled the available space on the museum’s grounds due to the presence of three newly acquired streetcars, which were under protective cover awaiting restoration.  We creatively parked our cars around these bulky new arrivals.

Continuing our good fortune weather-wise this year, it was a beautiful sunny early spring day with shirtsleeve temps in the high 60s.  Besides the good turnout of 30 members and guests, the nice weather and antique car show brought out many spectators to see our cars and also to ride the streetcars, which ran at half hour intervals.

Tommy Thompson brought his newly acquired 1973 Chevrolet sedan (what else would he have?), a very nice original car.  Besides being proud of this Chevy, Tommy also wanted everyone to know that April is the occasion for Eva and his 60th Anniversary, quite a milestone.

Anne and Tom Kenney reminisced about their visit to the streetcar  museum  28 years  ago in  the spring.   Some of the same vintage open streetcars are still in the rolling stock and the Kenneys got to ride them again.

The museum’s staff had three streetcars (554, 1164, and old faithful 7407) pulled out of the car barn in anticipation of a good turnout.  Most members took advantage of our free ride passes and made several trips.   After looking over member’s cars that were  either new  to this event,  or rarely seen, most of us had the opportunity to sit in the warm sun and visit, catching up after the winter break.

Paul Habicht proved that he is recovering nicely from his recent surgery by showing up with his 1959 Cadillac in mid- season show condition.  Ray Adler brought a great looking 1968 Dodge Charger RT; Ferd Driver made a grand entrance in a 1930 Ford Model A sedan pulling a period camping trailer; and Tom Pape, our newest member, showed his 1965 Dodge Coronet 440.

After  carefully  evaluating  the many nice cars  at this year’s show, John LaCosta, the museum’s officer of the day, picked Dave Benson’s flawless 1936 supercharged Graham sedan for the sponsor’s choice award.

Participating in the show were:  Ray Adler, ’68 Dodge; Mary & Ed Allen, ’70 Chevelle; Dave Benson. ’36 Graham; Larry Butcher, ’38 Lincoln; Pam, Nicholas & Tom Canova, ’66 Ford; Ferd Driver, ’30 Ford; Helen & Jerry Gordon, ’64 Lincoln; Paul Habicht, ’59 Cadillac; Richard Hiob; Rick Hollar, ’72 Buick; Anne & Tom Kenney, ’55 DeSoto; Bruce Knott, ’63 Ford; Gordon Mallonee, ’63 Chevrolet; Tom Pape, ’65 Dodge; Art Petrucci, ’36 Chrysler; Don Rhine,  ’40 Buick; Ted Schneider; Paul Smith, ’46 Chevrolet; Ruth & Jim Synodinos, ’72 Pontiac; Tommy Thompson, ’73 Chevrolet; and Tom Young, ’80 Plymouth.

The Club's car show brought out several interesting cars including Ferd Driver's 1930 Ford Model A with a tag along trailer.

At the end of another fun-filled day we gathered for our group photo in front of the popular 1944 Pullman-Standard #7407.
