Car
1964 1/2 Ford
Mustang
Owner: Harrel McKinney

In
March of 1964 I was a young (age 24) man who had graduated from
college (Troy University) two years before. I had a good job working
in Montgomery, AL and a wife and a 2 1/2-year-old daughter. I began
looking for a new car since what we had was about used up. My wife
(Peggy) and I went to Enterprise, AL where we lived while I finished
college. I knew a salesman at one of the dealerships and I almost
bought a Rambler Ambassador. We then went to Hartford, AL where I
knew the men who owned the Ford dealership. I drove a Fairlane 500
and was not impressed. Just before I was leaving, one of the owners
told me had just gotten some brochures of a new car Ford was
introducing called "Mustang".
He went into his office and came
out with a brochure (of which I still have one) and after I
salivated all over myself and popped my eyes back into my head, I
ordered one. There was one in the brochure, Wimbledon White/Palomino
interior and that is what I ordered with a 260 cu. inch V-8. It was
born May 14, 1964 and I took delivery on May 21, 1964. This (I
think) was a rarity, the sticker price was $2660 but because the
dealer knew me and several of my brothers were customers of his, he
sold the car to me for $2440.
It drove out perfectly, and I
have loved it ever since. I had it restored in 1989 and now just
drive it occasionally and on special occasions.
