Memorial Day Weekend

By Bud Sargent

Memorial Day weekend was an exciting time for a few members of the A.V. Region of the AACA.  Beginning with the West Coast Kustoms annual car show and ending with a tour of Dick Fischer's wonderful shop.

Dick is an Avid Car restorer with a Model A Coupe, a Brass era Model T touring and a 53 Merc hardtop that is gorgeous in every detail.  But, it doesn't stop there.  Dick is restoring airplanes as well.  He is currently restoring a 1929 Curtis Robbin and has a 1918 Curtis Jenny waiting in the background.  Dick has fastidiously rebuilt or remade every piece of the Robin and is finally getting close to adding the fabric to the fuselage and wing.  This is a mind boggling project and Dick has been working on it for years.

Along with his full size airplanes, Dick builds and flies radio controlled airplane models.  These are not contemporary models, but are built from plans drawn 50-70 years ago. Dick also has a large display of antique model airplane engines which he uses in some of his models.

It was a wonderful afternoon and highlighted with desert and a visit from their newest grand daughter. If you are ever going to be in the Arroyo Grande area, make sure to drop in and visit the Fisher's. SheraLynn makes a mean coffee cake.
