The Cruisin' Nationals 26 – 28 May 2006

By Bud Sargent

The West Coast Kustoms car club held their 25th annual Cruising Nationals over the Memorial Day weekend in Paso Robles.  It was a weekend filled with Rods, Custom and Antique cars on display and cruising through town. 1800 cars were allowed to enter before the entries were closed, turning away dozens of beautiful cars. "Vendors Row" was expanded over previous years to filling the entire Library parking lot as well as 2 streets. There was everything from T-Shirts to a display of Whizzer Motor Bikes from a local distributor.

George Barris and Gene Winfield were on hand to sign autographs, as well as Bo Hopkins and Sandy Clark (From "American Graffiti").

The group from the AV Region met on Friday afternoon to watch the parade of cruising cars on Spring Street. We met on the "Shady" side of the street so the hot sun wouldn't be in our eyes. Much to our surprise, it was cool and breezy that evening, so some sun would have been welcome.  But, die-hard automobile watchers, such as ourselves, we persevered and enjoyed the dazzling display of hundreds of amazing autos "Cruising" the main street of town. Spring Street was closed for 16 blocks to allow this parade and it appeared that most everyone in town was out to watch.

On Saturday, the group from the AACA met during the morning hours at the park to wander and admire the hundreds of interesting automobiles and look over the large displays of parts and accessories available at "Vendors Row". The afternoon was spent in various ways. Some of our group went off to Morro Bay, some went wine tasting and some took advantage of the time for a nap. Most of the AACA group met up for dinner at A.J. Spurs, in Templeton, that evening. We had a most enjoyable time eating and talking about the weekend of fun. Dinner was topped off with Root Beer floats and then it was time to say "Farewell".

Sunday, some of the group met at the Madonna Inn for breakfast while others met at John and Wilma Johnson's home for some "Plinking" down in the orchard.

It was a great weekend, filled with friendship and old cars.  What more could you ask for!
